MEDIA RELEASE - Airport Pavement Resurfacing Project
Heavy machinery, including an asphalt manufacturing plant and two 1000 tonne per hour paving machines expected to produce and lay over 20,000 of asphaltic concrete over next 3 months, will begin arriving at the Wagga Airport from today as part of the $6 million Wagga Wagga Airport Resurfacing Project.
An on-site contractors's construction compound to house the plant, covering a huge area of 1.5Ha is currently under construction and due for completion by 18 December. This will allow up to approximately 2,000 tonnes of ashpalt to be manufactured and laid during each shift of the project.
The first stage of the Resurfacing Project will be the asphaltic concrete resurfacing of the main runway which measures 1768 x 45m. The overlay will include a corrective layer to provide a more uniform surface, and addtional asphalt thickness where required to provide a consistent strength along the full length of the runway.
The runway will be overlayed to a depth of between 65-140mm of asphaltic concrete and is expected to take 6 days to complete.
Stages two and three will see the main taxiway from the aircraft parking apron to the runway widened from 15m to 19m and resurfaced. This extra width will allow larger aircraft to operate from the Airport.
The Resurfacing Project also includes resurfacing the western end of the main aircraft parking apron, including the aprons adjacent the REX maintenance hangars.
The asphalt resurfacing is due to begin late January 2010 and is expected to be complete by early March 2010.
All works will be carried out at night to allow the Airport to remain fully operational and serviceable to all flights during the day.
