THE NATION BUILDING ECONOMIC STIMULUS PLAN

 

The Australian Government is delivering a $42 billion Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan that includes funding for building and maintenance of schools, social housing and road and rail maintenance. The program is designed to support employment and make Australia more resilient in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

NSW's share of this funding is valued at over $7 billion including $1.5 billion to non-government schools. Key Social Housing and Education components of the funding are listed below. The works are to be completed in just two years.

The Taskforce Planning team has authorised over $1.8 billion worth of applications for projects in 18 months with a 31.1 calendar day assessment average. The number of planning authorisations given under the NBJP (Nation Building and Jobs Plan) Act has risen to 770 with an additional 240 applications for amendments to authorised projects (total applications approved being 1,010). All projects have been assessed using a full merit assessment process and direct consultation has been undertaken with Councils and relevant Government agencies. All authorisations and amendments have been published in The Sydney Morning Herald and the assessment information about each project is available on the Taskforce website. The approved applications (including amendments), as at 18 November 2010, are as follows:

• 592 for Government schools
• 175 for Catholic schools
• 106 for Independent schools
• 3 TAFE college projects
• 4 for Community infrastructure projects
• 130 for Social Housing projects (including 58 amendments)
